Intel’s tiny, low-power processors called ‘Atom’

atomcg.gif

Intel’s just officially announced its smallest tiniest processor — the Atom, formerly codenamed Diamondville & Silverthorne.

The chip will also be available as part of the “Centrino Atom” platform (codenamed Menlow), which will be “the Intel Atom processor, a low-power companion chip with integrated graphics, a wireless radio & thinner & lighter designs.”

Here is more from Intel’s press release…

The Intel Atom processor is based on an entirely new microarchitecture designed specifically for small devices and low power, while maintaining the Intel Core 2 Duo instruction set compatibility consumers are accustomed to when using a standard PC and the Internet. The design also includes support for multiple threads for better performance and increased system responsiveness. All of this on a chip that measures less than 25 mm, making it Intel’s smallest and lowest power processor yet. Up to 11 Intel Atom processor die — the tiny slivers of silicon packed with 47 million transistors each — would fit in an area the size of an American penny.

These new chips, previously codenamed Silverthorne and Diamondville, will be manufactured on Intel’s industry-leading 45nm process with hi-k metal gate technology. The chips have a thermal design power (TDP) specification in 0.6-2.5 watt range and scale to 1.8GHz speeds depending on customer need. By comparison, today’s mainstream mobile Core 2 Duo processors have a TDP in the 35-watt range.

The Atom chip is squarely targeted at MIDs (mobile internet devices), “netbooks,” & “nettops” (basic internet PCs). That last part interests me ~ the basic internet PCs —~ because I bet we will start seeing $200 to $300 usd desktops that don’t look like a cheap pile of crap & sound like a 747 taking off.

They will probably be a lot smaller & cuter, similar to the Zonbu desktop PC. & they might (might) finally make their way closer & closer to the living room.

My Favorite Firefox Addons

I read an article on the internet a couple of days back regarding the top addons for the Firefox web browser. This article prompted me to list down the number of addons I had installed for firefox over the times and the result was well… staggering

1. StumbleUpon Toolbar

(Download from : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/138)

StumbleUpon (http://www.stumbleupon.com) is a social networking site.. a great social networking site which helps you discover new links from various topics from food to technology to politics. And SU is the one of the first social networking sites to which I was hooked to. What SU does, is to provide platforms to share web links on various topics, review websites, meet people who share similar interests and exchange web links with them.

Firefox supports the SU toolbar which is one of the first reason why using SU is so fun and easy. The SU toolbar provides option to stumble upon wide range of topics. If you want to stumble the sites of a fellow stumbler (well thats what users of SU are called) then type in the name and you are ready to go. If you like a website then click on “I Like it” so that some one else who wants to see your favorite sites can stumble upon this link. For a newly discovered site, the toolbar displays a window which allows you to write a review and select a label. Really easy!!!! Also with notifications of messages and with keyboard shortcuts, stumbling is really easy!!!

2. Meebo Addon

(Download from : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5700)

Meebo(http://www.meebo.com) is a site which provides simultaneous login into your GTalk, Yahoo, AIM, MSN and many other IM accounts.. Apart from that meebo provides great applications like online games, file sharing, video chat among others.. With no downloads required whatsoever Meebo is truly an innovative step towards instant messaging.

But what makes Meebo more like-able for me is the Meebo addon with the Firefox. Meebo Addon provides features like automatic login when you open the browser window, message alert, user login alert. These notifications are not present otherwise and this addon really helps you by giving alerts when you are also doing some other work.

3. Firebug

(Download from : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1843)

Firebug is another firefox addon which basically allows you to inspect and also edit the CSS, JavaScript, DOM among others.
I wont write anything else.. this small and a very novice tweak will make you programming buddies fall in love with Firebug.

4. GreaseMonkey

(Download from : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748)

Millions of downloads and Millions of articles over the internet later GreaseMonkey is one of the most discussed and sought after addon by Mozilla.
This is just another small paragraph in the legacy of GreaseMonkey
GreaseMonkey is one of the most downloaded addon of firefox. GreaseMonkey allows you to customize your web page by making changes to the HTML or the Java Script code. A user can add his own functionality and can reload the page to see the effect immediately. Users can write codes which can range from popup blockers, to Javascript functionalities like providing RSS feeds option. What basically greasemonkey does for a JavaScript/JScript programmer is to customize the web according to the liking of the user.

5. Cool Iris Previews

(Download from : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2207)

Cool Iris Previews is another cool addon from Firefox. What Cool Iris does is pretty simple, when you move your mouse over a certain link a Cool Iris icon comes near that link. Moving you mouse over that icon will open the corresponding link. Really useful when you use FireFox like me with three widows open and about 10 tabs in each of them trying to access a web page. Opening another tab or another window is not going to be convenient.. Cool Iris comes in handy at this time. Apart from this, Cool Iris provides other functionalities like sharing of web links to your friends. Cool Iris also provides Google and Wikipedia search by selecting the text on the web page and right clicking the mouse. A stack option is available in Cool Iris which is a temporary bookmark option available.

6. Thumbstrips

(Download from : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5045)

Yet another bookmark addon is Thumbstrip. What makes Thumbstrip a download option is that it stores thumbnail images of the websites visited by you. So next time you need to revisit a previously visited link, simply open the Thumbstrip toolbar and select the website. So now there is no need to remember the names of the link. Thumbstrip also gives you the relative time as to when the website was previoisly opened, so searching becomes more easy.

7. Google Preview

(Download from : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/189)

Another interesting addon from FireFox is Google Preview. Google Preview gives you thumbnail images of websites along with the Google search results on the same page. And why is it beneficial? Well for people who continuously search something on the internet and if they previously found a solution to their problems but failed to save the webpage, then sometimes looking at the image along with the generated results helps them in going back to their webpage. I installed this addon when I faced the same problem a couple of times. And trust me its really useful.

8. Hyperwords

(Download from :https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1941)

Hyperwords is another very useful addon from FireFox. Its really simple to use, what you have to do is just highlight the text and immediately a drop down comes which gives you options like Google Search, Images search from Flicker, Google, etc.. People search from Facebook, Myspace etc.. Maps search. You can also search Wikipedia, TV.com and if the highlighted text is a name of a company then you can also view the stock details and the financial details of the company. Apart from this hyperwords also translates web pages, share web pages and even blog it. If the selected item is an accessory then hyperwords also gives you an option to search Ebay, Amazon etc.
Truly one of the most useful addons by Firefox

9. Read it later

(Download from : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6000)

Another simple addon is the Read It Later. What you simply need to do is right click on the web page and select the option Read It Later. This option will save the webpage link inside the bookmarks folder. A simple and easy utility

10. Flash Got

(Download from : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/220)

FlashGot is another useful addon while downloading from the internet. FlashGot allows the user to select a pre-installed download manager as a default download manager. So instead of using the inbuilt download facility from FireFox now you can set Free Download Manager or Download Accelerator Plus for standard downloading and BitComet or Azureus for torrent related downloads. FlashGot also allows the user to select multiple links at the same time and download all of them at once.

11. Tab Effect

(Download from : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4258)

Tab Effect is another cool addon which helps you add effects while changing tabs. No special advantage apart from that. I basically downloaded this so that I could impress my friends…

12. Shareaholic

(Download from : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5457)

Ok we have Digg Toolbar and StumbleUpon Toolbar..how about now having an addon which allows you to share links across sites like Twitter, Facebook, Del.icio.us etc. Thats precisely what Shareaholic provides. Once you open a web page and you feel like this web page is worth submitting around the social bookmarking sites then simple click on the Shareaholic button, a drop down window comes which will show you whether the page has already been submitted to a corresponding site. If not simply click the website to which you want to submit the link. A simple registration will allow you to share this web page to your friends via email..

So there you go a list of..12 addons from Firefox. All these firefox addons just make my surfing a better experience….

Tips to Solve Uncommon Windows Error Messages

Tips to Solve Uncommon Windows Error Messages

While working on your Windows PC you may come across several common and uncommon computer errors, such as Windows XP stop 0x0000001E Error and WMP.dll Error Message. These errors may occur when certain conditions on your PC are true.

Discussed in this article are a few steps that you can perform to resolve such computer errors:

Free Up Disk Space

These days, despite having hard disks with a large amount storage space, it does not take long to fill it up. This happens because with the increase in disk space, the space requirements for different software programs and different types of files have also increased. Listed below are some of the tasks that you can perform to free up disk space:

  • Use Add or Remove Programs or a good third-party program uninstaller to uninstall unwanted programs.
  • Use the Disk Cleanup utility to get rid of unwanted temporary files, programs setup files, and old system restore points.
  • Use the Disk Defragmenter tool to consolidate fragmented files and make your data contiguous.

Remove Faulty Programs and Device Drivers

Errors, such as Windows XP Stop 0×0000001E error are known to occur due to problems with a device driver or program. Usually, the name of the faulty device driver or program file appears in the error message. In case this happens, you may perform one of the following tasks to resolve the error:

  • Use Device Manager or Add or Remove Programs (whichever applies) utility to uninstall the faulty device driver or faulty program reported in the error message.
  • Visit the device or program manufacturer web site to check if any updates for the software are available—if you find an update, install it to resolve the error.

Update Your System

Several software error messages, such as WMP.dll error message are displayed due to the existence of old versions of program files. To prevent errors such as these, you must always keep your operating system, software programs, and device drivers updated with the latest service packs and security releases. Windows operating systems and many programs and drivers comprise the automatic update feature. You should keep this feature enabled to ensure that the software on your system always stays updated. This will not only help prevent compatibility related errors, but also prevent infections from malware programs that are built around these security lapses.

Scan and Repair the Windows Registry

Computer problems can also occur due to registry bloating. Registry bloating occurs when a large amount of unwanted, obsolete, and invalid entries accumulate within the registry. When the registry bloats up, it becomes unstable and starts generating computer errors. To prevent computer errors due to registry problems, you must regularly scan and repair your registry. As it is difficult to perform manual scan and clean up of the complex registry files, you may use a reliable third-party registry tool to perform the task.

Scan and Remove Malware

Malware programs, such as virus, Trojans, and spyware can generate several computer problems. Two tools that are essential to combat these malicious programs are antivirus and antispyware tools. You must obtain and install these tools on your computer. Additionally, always keep the tools updated with the latest virus database and schedule them to perform full system scans on a regular basis to ensure that your PC remains free of malicious information at all times.

Adobe CEO Shoots Down Microsoft Acquisition Rumor

Microsoft and Adobe are reportedly working together to chip away at Apple's dominance in the mobile phone market, but Adobe's top executive is throwing cold water on the smoldering rumor that Microsoft might acquire his company.

"Adobe's growth prospects are so great that our focus is on seizing these opportunities as an independent company," Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen told the Financial Times Deutschland, as reported by Reuters.

Earlier this month, Narayen met with Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer at Adobe headquarters to discuss a partnership aimed at slowing Apple's mobile momentum, as well as a possible acquisition of Adobe by Microsoft, according to an October 7 report in The New York Times.

The following day, Ballmer declined to comment on The New York Times report, although enigmatically enough to leave the door open for further speculation. "If you are going to do something, you say nothing," Ballmer said at a conference in Spain. "So I'll be entirely consistent with standard CEO operating procedure."

Microsoft was interested in acquiring Adobe several years ago, according to The New York Times, but the rumor is nonetheless one of the more bizarre and illogical to come around in a while. Adobe investors took the report at face value, though, sending the company's shares up 17 percent on the day it was published.

Why a Microsoft-Adobe partnership makes sense

Adobe and Microsoft are obviously looking to derail Apple's progress in mobility, and the two companies share many of the same customers. But aside from the notion that Microsoft might want to gobble up Flash to further its agenda with Silverlight, it's hard to see where the synergies would lie in such a deal.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs hasn't been shy about his disdain for Adobe Flash: In addition to the well-publicized barriers to Flash on the iPhone, Apple last week said it will no longer pre-install Flash on new Macs. Microsoft, meanwhile, has been getting its lunch eaten by Apple in the mobile space and is embarking on a major marketing campaign for its new mobile OS, Windows Phone 7.

Adobe has been forging ahead with its strategy of getting Flash onto mobile devices, and on Monday the company released AIR 2.5, the latest iteration of its development suite for building apps that run not only on desktops, but also on smartphones, tablets and the coming wave of interactive televisions.

Wi-Fi Direct: Boon Or Security Risk?

A global non-profit organization, the Wi-Fi Alliance said it had begun certifying products as Wi-Fi Certified Wi-Fi Direct, officially opening the floodgates for Wi-Fi Direct devices.

A form of peer-to-peer wireless networking, Wi-Fi Direct devices can establish wireless connectivity with each other without requiring a wireless router, hot spot or access point. The access itself is provided through on board software—or a "soft AP"—through which the device can control network traffic much like a regular access point would. Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2) is included in certified Wi-Fi Direct devices, according to the Alliance, to ensure security, although skeptics challenge that if so many individual devices have soft APs, network security risks heighten.

Aficionados liken Wi-Fi Direct to Bluetooth connectivity, but with a stronger connection and wider range. According to an FAQ posted by the Wi-Fi Alliance, Wi-Fi Direct devices offer speeds of up to 250 Mbps, and cover a range of up to 200 meters.

"We designed Wi-Fi Direct to unleash a wide variety of applications which require device connections, but do not need the Internet or even a traditional network," said Wi-Fi Alliance CEO Edgar Figueroa in a statement. "Wi-Fi Direct empowers users to connect devices—when, where and how they want to, and our certification program delivers products that work well together, regardless of the brand."

The Wi-Fi Alliance has designated five Wi-Fi cards as the first to be Certified Wi-Fi Direct: the Atheros XSPAN Dual-band 802.11n PCIe Mini Card, Broadcom's BCM43224 Dual-band 802.11n 2x2 MIMO PCIe Half Mini Card, Intel's Centrino Advanced-N 6200, Ralink's MIMObility 802.11n 2x2 PCIe Half Mini Card and Realtek's RTL8192CE-VA4 HM92C00 PCIee mini card. Those products, along with Cisco's 2106 Wireless LAN controller and Aironet 1240 Series access point, comprise the Wi-Fi Direct test suite.
